Frequently Barked Questions
Answers to common questions about our antlers and chews
General Information
Should I supervise my dog?
Absolutely, we recommend supervising your dog while they enjoy their Moose Antler Chews. While these chews are a safe and natural option for your furry friend, supervision is a proactive measure to ensure their safety and well-being.
Supervision allows you to observe your dog's chewing behavior and intervene if needed. Here's why it's important:
1. Prevent Choking Hazards: While Moose Antler Dog Chews are durable, supervision allows you to promptly address any potential choking hazards and take appropriate action.
2. Monitor Chewing Intensity: Some dogs are more enthusiastic chewers than others. Supervision helps you gauge your dog's chewing intensity and ensure they're not exerting excessive force that could lead to dental or oral issues.
3. Introduce Gradually: If your dog is new to Moose Antler Chews, supervising their initial interactions helps you introduce the chew gradually. This is especially important for puppies or dogs new to this type of chew, as they may need time to acclimate to the texture and sensation.
4. Personalized Care: Every dog is unique, and some may have specific chewing habits or preferences. Supervising your dog with Moose Antler Chews allows you to provide personalized care and address any concerns based on their individual behavior.
While Moose Antler Dog Chews are designed for safe and enjoyable chewing, your proactive involvement ensures a positive experience for your dog. As responsible pet owners, your attentive supervision adds an extra layer of protection, promoting a secure and delightful chew session for your furry companion.

What are moose antlers?
Moose antlers are the large, solid bone structures grown by bull moose each year. After the breeding season, moose naturally shed their antlers. No harm, no farming, no harvesting from live animals. The antlers simply fall off and are left on the ground.
Those naturally shed antlers are what become moose antler chews.
Once collected, the antlers are cleaned, cut, and prepared for dogs to chew. Nothing is added. No chemicals. No fillers. No artificial flavoring. They are exactly what they sound like: real moose antler.
Moose antlers are valued as dog chews because they last a long time, wear down gradually, and satisfy a dog’s natural urge to chew. As dogs gnaw, tiny particles wear away instead of the chew breaking down quickly. That slow wear is what makes antlers both engaging and long lasting.
They are also naturally rich in minerals like calcium and phosphorus, which is one of the reasons wild animals have been chewing on antlers long before dog chews ever existed.
In short: real antler, naturally shed, minimally processed, built to last.
How are your moose antler chews made?
Our moose antler chews start exactly where they should: in the woods.
Sourcing and Collection
We only use naturally shed moose antlers. That means the antlers drop naturally each year and are collected off the ground. No animals are harmed, farmed, or harvested.
Some of our antlers are found personally with our shed dogs, and others come from trusted regional partners who follow the same standards we do. Every antler is evaluated before it ever becomes a chew.
Cleaning and Prep
Once collected, antlers are cleaned to remove dirt and debris. We do not use chemicals, fillers, or artificial treatments. What you’re left with is real antler in its natural state.
Cutting and Sizing
Antlers are then cut into different sizes and styles based on how dogs actually chew.
This matters because different sections of the antler behave differently. Some are better for moderate chewers. Some are built for aggressive chewers. We cut intentionally so dogs get a chew that works the way it should.
Sanding and Safety
Every piece is sanded to remove sharp edges. This helps create a smoother, safer chew without changing the natural structure of the antler.
Inspection and Quality Control
Every chew is inspected before it ships. If an antler is overly dry, cracked, or doesn’t meet our standards, it gets rejected. Simple as that.
Final Result
The end product is exactly what we aim for:
A real, naturally shed moose antler.
Minimal processing.
No additives.
Built to last.
Prepared by people who actually understand antlers and how dogs use them.
Why are my antlers different colored?
Not every moose antler chew looks the same. That’s normal, and it’s actually a good sign you’re looking at a real, natural product.
Natural variation
Moose antlers are made of real bone and minerals. Just like wood grain or stone, no two pieces look identical. Some antlers are lighter. Some are darker. That variation happens naturally in the wild.
Age and mineral content
Antlers change slightly as the moose ages and as minerals build up during growth. This can affect color, tone, and density. It does not affect safety or quality.
Diet and environment
What a moose eats and where it lives can influence the color of the antler. Soil minerals, plants, and habitat all play a role. That’s why antlers from different regions often look a little different.
Cleaning and preparation
We do not bleach, stain, or artificially alter our antlers. The natural color you see is the real color of the antler. That means you may see variation from piece to piece, and that is exactly what you should expect with a real, minimally processed product.
Bottom line
Color variation is normal. It does not mean the chew is lower quality. It simply means it is real.
Where are your antlers sourced?
We care a lot about where our antlers come from, because sourcing directly affects quality, safety, and consistency.
Found in the wild, not farmed
Our antlers come from real, wild moose that naturally shed their antlers each year. No animals are harmed, handled, or farmed in the process. We collect sheds the way nature intended.
Shed dogs and boots on the ground
A portion of our antlers are found by us personally using our trained shed dogs here in Maine. We spend real time in the woods every season looking for fresh sheds. That hands-on experience is what sets our quality standards.
Trusted regional partners
We also work with a small network of trusted shed hunters in regions like Maine and Alaska who follow the same standards we do. These are not random bulk suppliers. These are people who understand freshness, condition, and proper handling.
We are selective about what we accept
Not every antler makes the cut. We look for antlers that are:
- Freshly shed
- Solid and intact
- Free from rot, cracking, or heavy sun damage
- Suitable for safe chewing
If an antler does not meet our standards, we do not use it.
Why this matters
Where an antler comes from and how it is handled makes a real difference in how it performs as a chew. Fresh, well-sourced antlers are less brittle, wear more naturally, and are simply safer and better for dogs.
That is why we stay closely involved in sourcing instead of buying anonymous bulk antlers.
Are any animals harmed in the sourcing of your products?
No. Moose are never harmed for these chews.
All of our antlers come from natural sheds. Every year after the breeding season, moose drop their antlers on their own as part of their normal life cycle. That is when they are collected.
We do not:
- Farm moose
- Handle live animals
- Cut antlers from animals
- Disturb moose during shedding
Our shed dogs are trained to find antlers that are already on the ground. They are not tracking animals, chasing wildlife, or interacting with moose.
This is simply collecting what nature leaves behind.
That matters to us for two reasons:
- It is the ethical way to source antlers
- Naturally shed antlers are higher quality than antlers taken any other way
When you give your dog an Allagash Antler chew, you are giving them a product that is responsibly sourced, natural, and collected with respect for wildlife.
Why do my moose antler chews have an odor?
Moose antler chews can have a light, natural scent. That’s normal. It usually smells earthy or woody and comes from the minerals and natural material inside the antler. Most people barely notice it.
A few things can affect scent:
- Fresh antlers may have a faint natural smell that fades over time
- Saliva can create a mild scent while a dog is actively chewing
- Storage matters. If any chew is left somewhere damp for too long, it can develop an unpleasant odor
What’s not normal is a strong, sour, or moldy smell. That can mean the chew was exposed to moisture or stored poorly.
If an antler ever smells off, inspect it closely. If something doesn’t look or smell right, stop using it and replace it. Store chews in a dry area and they should stay odor-free.
If you ever receive an antler that doesn’t seem right, reach out to us and we’ll make it right.
Additional Information
Are Moose Antler Dog Chews Suitable for All Dog Breeds and Sizes?
Yes. Moose antler chews work for dogs of all sizes and breeds.
The key is choosing the right size and type. Smaller dogs need smaller, lighter pieces. Larger dogs do better with thicker, denser sections. That’s why we offer different sizes and styles, so each dog can get a chew that fits how they actually chew.
When sized correctly, moose antlers provide a long-lasting, natural chew for everything from small dogs to large breeds.
Can Puppies Use Moose Antler Dog Chews?
Yes. Puppies can enjoy moose antler chews.
The key is choosing the right size for their age and size, just like with adult dogs. Start with a smaller piece and keep an eye on how they chew as they get used to it. Most puppies naturally gnaw rather than try to crush, which is exactly how antlers are meant to be used.
Moose antlers can be a good option for puppies who like to chew, especially when they are teething and looking for something long-lasting.
How Long Do Moose Antler Dog Chews Last?
A long time.
How long exactly depends on how your dog chews, but moose antler chews are known for lasting weeks to months, not minutes. Some dogs work on the same antler for a very long time, especially when it’s the right size and section for their chewing style.
They are designed to wear down slowly through steady gnawing instead of being eaten quickly, which is why many people choose them over short-lived chews.
Do Moose Antler Dog Chews Splinter?
No. Quality moose antlers are known for wearing down gradually, not splintering.
Fresh, properly handled moose antlers are dense and filled with marrow, which allows them to shave down slowly as dogs gnaw instead of breaking apart into sharp pieces. That’s one of the reasons moose antlers are so widely used for dog chews.
Most splintering issues people hear about come from old, overly dry, or poorly sourced antlers, not from fresh moose antlers that have been cleaned, cut, and inspected correctly.
With normal use, moose antler chews wear down over time instead of breaking.
Are Moose Antler Dog Chews Messy?
No. Moose antler chews are one of the cleanest chew options out there.
They don’t crumble, get greasy, or leave sticky residue. As dogs chew, the antler simply wears down slowly instead of falling apart, so there’s no mess on floors, furniture, or hands.
That’s one of the reasons many people prefer antlers for indoor chewing.
Can Aggressive Chewers Use Moose Antler Dog Chews?
Yes. Moose antler chews are known for being very durable and hold up well to strong chewers.
They are designed to be worked on through steady gnawing rather than disappearing quickly, which makes them a solid option for dogs that go through most chews too fast.
When properly sized, they can keep even heavy chewers occupied far longer than most treats and chews.
Are Moose Antler Dog Chews Nutritious for My Dog?
Yes. Moose antlers naturally contain minerals like calcium, phosphorus, and other trace nutrients.
Dogs ingest very small amounts as they chew, which is one reason many dogs stay interested in antlers for long periods. That said, antlers are best thought of as a chew, not a food or supplement. They are meant for enrichment and long-lasting chewing, not as a replacement for a balanced diet.
How Should I Introduce Moose Antler Dog Chews to My Dog?
Start simple. Give your dog the antler while you’re around and let them explore it at their own pace.
Most dogs take to antlers quickly, but if it’s their first one, short chewing sessions at the beginning can help them get used to the texture. Over time, they’ll naturally settle into steady gnawing.
There’s no special process needed. Just offer it, supervise like you would with any chew, and let your dog figure it out.
Can Moose Antler Dog Chews Help with Dental Health?
They can help, yes.
The natural gnawing action against an antler can help scrape away some plaque buildup over time and keep teeth a bit cleaner than chews that disappear quickly.
That said, antlers are not a replacement for regular dental care. Think of them as a helpful bonus, not a toothbrush. Regular checkups and proper dental care still matter.
