Best Chews for Labrador Retrievers That Actually Last

Labradors love to chew. Anyone who’s owned one for more than a week already knows that.

When I first started giving my dogs chews, I went through the same cycle most people do. You grab something at the store, bring it home, and within a day or two it’s gone. Sometimes it doesn’t even make it through the night.

At first you think it’s just your dog. Maybe they chew harder than most.

After a while you realize it’s not the dog at all.

It’s what you’re giving them.

Why Labs Go Through Chews So Fast

Labs were built to work.

They carry things in their mouth, stay active, and have a lot of drive behind everything they do. Even if they’re just a house dog now, that instinct doesn’t go anywhere.

So when you give them something to chew on, they don’t just sit there with it.

They go to work on it.

Most chews just aren’t made for that. They’re too soft, too processed, or they dry out and fall apart.

That’s why they disappear so fast.

What I Started Noticing Over Time

After going through a pile of different chews, you start to notice a pattern.

The ones that disappear quickly all have something in common.

They’re:

  • soft
  • small
  • or just not built very well

And the ones that last a little longer?

They’re usually:

  • denser
  • more natural
  • and sized right for the dog

That last part matters more than most people think.

If you’re not sure what size your dog should have, it’s worth taking a look at a proper antler chew sizing guide for dogs. Bigger pieces almost always last longer, especially for Labs that chew hard.

What Actually Holds Up for Labs

There aren’t many chews that consistently last for a strong dog, but one of the few that does is moose antlers.

That’s not something I figured out right away. It came after trying a bunch of other options that didn’t work.

Antlers are different because they’re naturally dense. Instead of disappearing in a day or two, they slowly wear down over time.

That’s really the biggest difference.

If you’ve been going back and forth between different types, it also helps to understand the difference between whole vs split antler chews. Whole antlers tend to last longer, while split antlers are easier for dogs to get into right away.

Most people don’t switch to antlers because they’re looking for something new. They switch because everything else didn’t last.

Choosing the Right One for Your Lab

Not all antlers are the same, and this is where a lot of people get tripped up.

For Labs, size and density matter more than anything.

If you’ve got an average Lab, medium to large pieces usually work fine.

If you’ve got a dog that chews hard and goes through everything you give them, you need to step it up. Thicker, heavier pieces tend to last quite a bit longer.

A lot of people make the mistake of going too small and end up right back where they started.

If your dog falls into that category, you’re better off looking at options built specifically for stronger dogs, like what’s covered in this guide on best dog chews for aggressive chewers (what actually lasts).

What Usually Doesn’t Work

Most of the frustration people run into comes from the same few things.

Rawhide is one of the big ones. It’s soft and most dogs go through it quickly.

Cheap antlers can be just as bad if they’re dried out or brittle. They’ll crack or wear down way faster than they should.

And anything small usually doesn’t stand a chance with a Lab.

That’s where you end up in that cycle of constantly replacing chews.

The Bottom Line

If your Lab is going through chews fast, it’s not because you’ve got some out-of-control dog.

That’s just how Labs are wired.

The difference comes down to what you’re giving them.

Once you switch to something that’s actually built to hold up, you’re not replacing it every couple days, and the whole thing gets a lot easier.
